MagistriMama loves telling you about the best board books we’ve enjoyed with Magistri Milo. We are not paid for these reviews and find titles through standard parental actions like visiting the library, receiving gifts from friends or family, and seeing books in community settings.

This board book is charming and fun. Its illustrations are bright and engaging while using a palate limited to 5 basic colors (black, white, yellow, orange, blue). There is no narrative, just attractive illustrations and sounds represented by onomatopoeia (plip plop for rain; click for headlights turning on; whoop WHOOSH for windshield wipers moving). This lack of narrative requires the reader(s) to interpret the action to actively construct the narrative. Who knew so few words could capture our kid’s imagination?
In short, this book is brilliant in its simplicity. This is no accident. Author Asia Citro is a professional educator with a master’s degree in science education and 12 children’s book to her credit. The quality of the illustrations is also explained by Troy Cummings’ resume, which includes authorship of more than 30 children’s books and the impressive description “New York Times bestselling author”. (I will look for their other books in our library now that I am armed with this information!)
We found Vroom Vroom Garbage Truck at our local library and have been surprised at how much Magistri Milo enjoys it. He asks to read it several times a day now! It has been fun to see how each parent adds our own context or narrative details when it’s our turn to read it to Milo. The library copy needs to go back, so we have added the book to Milo’s holiday wish list.
The 13 reviews on Amazon.com are similarly enthusiastic. The book has an average of 4.9 stars, with no review scoring under 4 stars. Four reviewers note receiving a free review copy in exchange for a review. Vroom Vroom is reportedly highly appreciated by toddler set and by preschoolers alike. The price is reasonable, especially if you buy it for a toddler and they continue to enjoy it through their preschool years.
